Sunday’s Well 27 Bandon 15

The ‘Well played out a very hard-fought League encounter against a strong talented Bandon team at Musgrave Park. The game was right in the balance at the end; with a late try for Bandon leaving them five points behind and in search of the win. The ‘Well ahead with three tries still had a chance at the bonus.

Bandon; as expected ran from deep but the ‘Well maintained their discipline. They kept the visitors pinned back and then a massive play was made by replacement prop Luke Jordan. He managed to win a loose ball back in a strong attacking position and showed awareness to set up Conor O’Brien who dazzled past the Bandon defence to secure a win and a crucial bonus point. It was a great outcome from a tenacious game where the ‘Well had to more of the defending but showed immense resilience and their squad depth; epitomised by Jordan saw them pull the win out.

Bandon were on top for the opening half-hour. A penalty on ten minutes by Nicolas Agustin Fernandez Bega put them into the lead. They played with a lot of ambition and some lovely interplay and while the ‘Well couldn’t get into the game offensively, they tackled ferociously. The backrow were immense while Alex Guerin and Kevin Holland also put in big hits.

Eventually a try did come from a breakaway, with Kerry Desmond for Bandon pouncing on a loose ball, kicking it forward and racing it after to gather just before the line and crash over. Vega converted and it was probably a deserved lead.

The ‘Well regathered. A powerful organised set-piece gave them a platform to work their way back into the game. A couple of strong line-out mauls allowed the ‘Well get up to pitch. It also committed players to the powerful drive and the ‘Well diverted the ball from the right. Quick hands and nice interplay saw O’Leary put Agustin Anuset through with the French-man still having a lot to do as two Bandon players converged on him; but Anuset finished nicely in the corner for the first score. A Logan Henry penalty made it a two-point game heading into half-time.

Boosted by that late rally; the ‘Well started the second half ferociously. Kicking-off; they pinned Bandon back and a half-blocked down kick gave them a great attacking position. Henry Logan orchestrated the attack with half-back partner Peter Arigho and a nice passing movement put Ian Casey over in the corner.

A few minutes later; the dancing feet of Logan Henry saw him skip past several Bandon tackles in a tight space around the Twenty-Two to scoot over for a wonderful solo try – which he also converted.

The ‘Well couldn’t retain the momentum as Bandon threw everything. An award came very late with a try after a scrappy exchange close to the ‘well line. A few minutes still remaining and with the ‘Well needing to prioritise a win; they defended robustly and the pressure led to the ultimate prize courtesy of Jordan and O’Brien.
