We are sad to announce the passing of a true Sunday’s Well great following the death of Jim Turnbull peacefully at home this morning Sunday February 9th.
An Honorary Life Member, Jim was a member of the club for nearly 70 years.
A true gentleman in every sense of the word, Jim was a member of the executive committee for most of those 70 years, being Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer among many of the roles he undertook.
Jim was a man who was held in great esteem by all who new him, and this was reflected in the huge amount of messages that were posted on social media.
A shy man, Jim never spoke of the work he did for the club, he just did it and then got on to the next issue to be resolved. While he sat on the executive committee, Jim always welcomed new members and encouraged retired players to take a position on the committee.
One of Jim’s great achievements was being team manager for the Munster team that beat the All-Blacks in 1978. He was highly regarded by everybody involved for his attention to detail, yet he rarely spoke about that famous day. Jim was a Sunday’s Well man through and through and this was far more important to him than Munster’s victory.
Jim was pre-deceased by his loving wife Patti a few years ago. We extend our deep condolences to his daughter Paula and son Derek, son-in-law Michael, daughter-in-law Margaret and his seven grandchildren.
Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
